historia del chocolateExisten contradicciones a la hora de definir de donde proviene la palabra Chocolate. Aunque está claro que ésta proviene de la palabra "xocolatl", vocablo que significa " agua Espumosa" (xoco: espuma – atl: agua), algunas fuentes indican que éste era el nombre de la bebida que le fue ofrecida al conquistador español Hernán Cortés a su llegada a Méxicoen 1.519, cuando el emperador Azteca Moctezuma junto con si pueblo lo tomaron por una reencarnación del Dios Quetzalcoatl, por haber arribado con sus tropas, por el mismo lugar por donde había prometido regresar, según rezaba la leyenda, el mencionado Dios. Moctezuma le daría entonces a Cortez el tratamiento debido a una divinidad y le ofrecería esta bebida, reservada sólo a personas de alta posición social. Este episodio daría el nombre científico a la planta del cacao, la Theobroma que quiere decir en griego: Comida de los Dioses. Los Españoles dieron a la fruta que utilizaban los aztecas para la preparación de esta bebida, el nombre de "Amígdala Pecuniaria" ya que ésta era ampliamente utilizada como moneda de intercambio comercial.Otras fuentes, indican que el vocablo Xocolatl, proviene de los indígenas que habitaban la Isla de Guaja, frente a las costas Hondureñas, en donde Cristóbal Colón descubrió que los indígenas consumían una bebida bastante fuerte y amarga, que producía energía y vitalidad, la cual llevaba este nombre.
